Sonia Alvarez, 59, of Union City, was charged with obstruction in violation and served a disorderly persons offense in connection with Sunday's incident, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said.

Union City police responded to 1901 West St. on reports of an argument around 4 a.m.

Officers attempted to get inside to the apartment to make ensure the safety of all individuals when Alvarez became upset and wouldn't let police inside, Suarez said.

Union City Emergency Services Unit officers and the Hudson County Regional SWAT responded to the scene and -- with crisis and hostage negotiators -- were able to make contact with Alvarez.

Around noon, the officers safely and peacefully negotiated her surrender and the safe release of all occupants in the apartment – including three children ages six, seven and nine, authorities said.

There were no injuries during the operation to civilians or law enforcement.
